YOUNG ARCHAEOLOGISTS’ CLUB

SOUTHWELL YAC – INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS

The Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) is the only UK-wide club where 8–16 year olds can participate in real archaeology and discover why it matters.  The club could be a springboard for a future career or just a fun hobby to take up.

YAC members across the country take part in all sorts of fantastic, hands-on activities, such as excavation, working with artefacts, visiting historical sites, arts and crafts, and undertaking experimental archaeology.  We explore all eras of human history.  In Southwell we aim to do a variety of all these activities.

We will run the club on the second Saturday of every month, beginning with our first session on March 11th, between 10.30 to 12.30.  The meeting place will be in The Old Courthouse on the Burgage.  Between July 31st and August 4th we will be running a summer school dig all week.

Occasionally we hope to do visits to museums or sites of interest and will ask for your support in transporting your child.

The club will be run by experienced leaders who have all been vetted and approved for safeguarding purposes by The Council for British Archaeology (The CBA).

We ask for a one-off joining fee of £10 but will aim to make sessions free unless there are costs for admissions or occasional materials.

As a YAC member, young people will also have access to the YAC Pass, which gives free or discounted entry to hundreds of heritage sites across the UK, including those run by English Heritage, Historic Environment Scotland and Cadw.   Further details about the YAC can be found on their website: https://www.yac-uk.org/

If you think your child would like to attend the club, or at least try it out, please contact me.

We look forward to meeting you.
