About
Southwell Archaeology was formed in 2008 and became a Registered Charity in 2015. We play a prominent practical role in exploring the very special archaeological nature of Southwell in the context of the wider landscape of Nottinghamshire.

Southwell Community Archaeology Group is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) number 1163982, formed for the benefit of the public:
1) to advance the education of the public in the heritage and archaeological importance of Southwell and its locality (hereinafter referred to as “the area of benefit”) by:
- a) promoting research into that subject and to publish the useful results,
- b) conducting or assisting surveys and other investigations of the local archaeology and history; and
- c) such other means as the trustees may determine.
2) to promote for the benefit of the public the preservation and protection of features of archaeological importance in the area of benefit.
We are engaged in practical community archaeology activities including excavation, field survey and standing-buildings recording. We work in partnership with many organizations including the University of Nottingham, the University of Leicester, Nottingham Trent University, Historic England, York Archaeology, as well as Southwell Town Council, the Southwell Local History Society, Southwell Civic Society and the Southwell Heritage Trust.
We draw on a range of internationally recognised specialists to advise and teach us on many of the finds that we make.
Membership is open to all, irrespective of background or experience. The only requirement is an interest in the past.
A membership form can be dowloaded from our sidebar underneath the talks programme.
