Vicars Court Project

Painted Roman wall-plaster workshop

Zoe and Jo lead a workshop on painted Roman wall-plaster: what it is, how it’s made, cleaning, recording and conserving it. We then got on with recording our finds from the Vicars’ Court dig. Alot of what we had was in fact natural tufa/marl and mortar. We began to develop a fabric type series for the mortar. Unfortunately, given the autumnal monsoon, alot of people had to disappear early in order to get home and safeguard their properties. However, we have alot to be getting on with and Zoe has an exciting project in mind for the boxes of Southwell finds. Wattle gooves found on some of the mortar so we maybe looking at medieval material, which would fit the pottery profile.
