Norwell Overhall dig

Dig -day 5

The day starts off bright and sunny and ends in a deluge! Hey ho. We did some levelling today from a datum line on the wall of the Minster. Trowelled down to rubble and gravel packed layers with some intermediary contexts. Some 19th C clay pipe stems appearing along with assorted sherds of late 18th/19th c pottery, nothing to dance about, but all part of the narrative. Once these contexts are cleaned off we’ll be going deeper.

David gives the morning dig briefing.
and explains about keeping the section tidy.
and we get stuck in!
placing the staff on the datum line
and we take the level
is the staff vertical? Somewhere over there!
Looking west along the trench at lunch time.
